Sep 1st GnomeToaster Documentation update
I just updated the GnomeToaster documentation. Thanks to OpenOffice it even contains some screenshots now which should make reading the docs a lot more fun to do. The documentation is available at http://gnometoaster.rulez.org/documentation/gnometoaster_users_guide.pdf.gz.
Sep 1st GnomeToaster 1.0Beta6 Compilation problem fixed
After playing with the intestines of gettext a bit I made GnomeToaster's internationalization stuff work again. Sorry for the inconvenience, the gtoaster1.0Beta6.tgz archive has meanwhile been replaced by a working version.
Sep 1st Compile problems 1.0Beta6
I'm sorry to tell you that the Beta6 version is most likely not compilable on your computer. The reason for this is a broken GNU gettext installation I did not find out about in time. I'm currently trying to fix these problems but I'm having a strange time here with that stuff.Currently, it bails out with make[2]: *** No rule to make target @CATALOGS@', needed by all-yes'. Stop. after having manually fixed another nice one which was make[2]: *** No rule to make target /config.status', needed by Makefile'. Stop. The reference to /config.status is coming directly from a template copied into ./po by gettextize so I wonder whether the person building that software was drunk. But I'm sure it made some kind of sense to him when he did that :*) Anyway, expect a fixed version to be online sometime today.
Aug 31st Gnometoaster 1.0Beta6 available
Sorry to everybody for not updating GnomeToaster for such a long time, but I've had other business to do (and will continue to ;-)). Nevertheless I promise updates will be more frequent again. This release contains bugfixes mostly but it also features a nice patch provided by a friend of mine, Rolf Schaeuble, to allow users to directly jump into their home directory and even make this their default location when starting GnomeToaster. For a detailed list of changes, see Changes since last release.
Feb 11th GnomeToaster Documentation back online (somewhat)
I just uploaded an updated GnomeToaster User's Guide. It's currently lacking all screenshots as I'm having technical difficulties with StarOffice (6.0 Beta that is, so it's no big surprise really ;-)). It keeps forgetting how to load some of the screenshots on a random basis which can be kind of annoying. Anyway, there's only a PDF right now but it's better to have this sort of thing on your harddrive once and for all anyway (plus I think the download size of about 400kb is reasonable enough). There will be a html version once I get these screenshots to work...
Feb 10th Beta5 Binary packages online
After a short delay, there come the various binary and rpm packages provided by third parties over the past few days. Thanks a lot to all of them, the packages actually used (there were a few duplicates so I used the ones with the most features like desktop integration etc.) were done by: John Thacker, Mattew Schick, Ralph Slooten and Christian Roessner. Thanks to all other contributors as well, I'll try to react a bit more quickly regarding packages in the future. This is also the place to remind you that if a package is broken for some reason, please don't hesitate to tell me. I'll forward a report to their respective creators and try to provide a working one.
Jan 27th GnomeToaster Version1Beta5 Mandrake
Ralph Slooten just sent in the RPM package for Mandrake. As usual, you can get it from the Downloads section.
Jan 27th GnomeToaster Hotfix (Versioned 1.0Beta5)
Broken ogg-vorbis functionality required the release of this Beta5 version which apart from fixing tracksize calculation for ogg-vorbis files is not differ from yesterday's Beta4 in any way. I will not post any binary packages of Beta4 here since everybody should really upgrade to Beta5 unless he wants to see any more bad surprises since the ogg-vorbis bug might as well affect other parts of GnomeToaster as well.
Jan 26th GnomeToaster 1.0 Beta4
Finally, the Beta4 release is here. It contains mostly bugfixes and smaller improvements but should solve the ugly drive scan problem RedHat/Mandrake/SuSE users had. As usual, you can get it from the download page.
Jan 26th Documentation temporarily offline
The GnomeToaster User's guide has been taken offline temporarily as it is currently being updated. Further versions of the docs will be created using OpenOffice.
Nov 6th GnomeToaster 1.0Beta3 Binary Packages ready
Hi folks! I just uploaded the binary packages I received for various distributions: Matthew Schick sent in a source rpm and binary rpm for RedHat 7.2, Tony Breiler provided x86 and 686-optimized packages for RedHat 7.1 while Ralph Slooten took care of Linux Mandrake 8.0. Also, Jose Carlos Garcia Sogo was so kind as to update the debian sid package in the apt repositories. The debian package is not available for download from this site but should be obtained through apt. This way, dependencies will resolve themselves automatically. Ok, now go ahead and get your favourite from the download page.
Oct 28th GnomeToaster 1.0Beta3 Release
Today, daylight savings time ends for the northern half of this planet as a clear sign that winter is approaching in giant leaps. I used this extra hour to create a new release for you: GnomeToaster 1.0Beta3. A few problems were fixed as well as features added. There's some initial work towards making GnomeToaster usable with your keyboard (e.g. you can now search for files by typing in their first letters). I know it took a long time to get this release out but I've been busy elsewhere. So just go and have a look at this brand-new incarnation of GnomeToaster.
Aug 26th RedHat 7.1 Package (Beta2)
I just uploaded a RedHat 7.1 package of GnomeToaster 1.0 Beta2 provided by James Segarra. Thank you so much! On a second note, it seems that RedHat has GnomeToaster 1.0 Beta2 included in their 7.2 Beta so you should probably be using this one if you're one of the brave RedHat beta testers :) Whereas for everyone else, there's probably going to be a 1.0Beta3 release in one of the next days, fixing among other things a problem with dnd'ing multiple files from some versions of KDE's konqueror into GnomeToaster.
Jul 26th Japanese Translation of GnomeToaster User's Guide
Junji Maruyama sent me a Japanese translation of the GnomeToaster User's Guide this afternoon. I think it's a great idea to have localized versions of the User's Guide although I have to admit I haven't even had the time to do a German one so far. Thank you even more so, Junji. And here comes the link: http://gnometoaster.rulez.org/documentation/gnometoaster_users_guide_ja.html .
Jul 15th RPM Packages for GnomeToaster 1.0 Beta2
Sorry about the delay but I've been a bit busy lately. I just uploaded the usual assortment of RPM packages for the current Beta2 release of GnomeToaster, provided this time by Ralph Slooten (Mandrake 8.0) and Tony Breiler (RedHat 7.0 Linux). Thanks to both. For Mandrake 8, you may also want to get the package packaged by the Mandrake team at their server. Ok, now for the download link: Here you go.
Jul 1st GnomeToaster 1.0 Beta2 Released
I just uploaded the second beta version of the upcoming GnomeToaster 1.0 release. It fixes a couple of bugs contained in the first beta and also contains some small fixes enhancing the user experience. You can download the new release from the usual location or have a look at a list of new features and bugfixes fist.
Jun 7th Binary Packages for all flavours of RedHat and Mandrake available
A couple of people sent in .rpm packages of GnomeToaster over the past two days. Thanks a lot to Tony Breiler (RedHat 7.0, i386+i686), Ralph Slooten (RH7.0,i386,src,Mdk8,i686,src), Leigh Purdie (RH7.1,i386,Gnome1.4), Matthew Schick (RH7.1,src,i386). You can get all those packages in the Download Section.
Jun 7th GnomeToaster 1.0Beta1 Mandrake RPM
Ralph Slooten just sent me the RPMs for the GnomeToaster Beta1 as well as the oggtst programm necessary to calculate ogg vorbis playing time. You can get both in the Download section.
Jun 4th Gnometoaster 1.0Beta1 Release available
I just uploaded the 1.0Beta1 release of GnomeToaster. This means that we're finally approaching 1.0. It also means that no new features are going to be added to the 1.0 release candidate. This release adds support for the ogg-vorbis and shorten file formats as well as a switch to turn buffer-underrun protection on and off for writers supporting it. There have also been a bunch of bugfixes and optical enhancements. See Changes since last release for details or go straight for the download in the Download Section.
May 8th PowerPC Binary Package for LinuxPPC

Apr 26th Seawolf (RedHat7.1) RPM Packages
Matthias Saou provided an adapted .src.rpm as well as an .i386.rpm for RedHat 7.1 Thanks a lot. You can go directly to the download section or get those and other great rpm packages from http://seawolf.freshrpms.net/. Gnometoaster will also be updated regularly there in the future.
Apr 25th Updated Mandrake 7.2 package
Just received an updated .RPM binary for Linux Mandrake 7.2. provided by Chris Lea as well as a Mandrake 8 package provided by Ralph Slooten. A Source-RPM package has also been provided (Chris Lea). Thanks a lot ! You can get it in the Download Section.
Apr 24th Gnometoaster 2001-04-24 Bugfix Release
No, not another one. But it's true. Yet another ugly bug has crept into the last Gnometoaster release. It would make Gnometoaster deadlock when scanning for drives. Ok, this together with the French translation file I got this morning makes for a nice new release. You can get the source-archive as well as an updated rpm binary package for RedHat 7.0 in the Download section.
Apr 24th RedHat 7.0 Package for 2001-04-24 Available
Just uploaded an RPM binary for this most current bugfix release provided by Jos Dehaes. Thanks a lot, I hope this was the last bugfix release before we can start adding features again ;-) Speaking of which, Arnaud Boissinot sent in a new French translation file. Thanks to him as well. It's in the cvs and will make the next release quite a richer experience for all french users of Gnometoaster. As usual, you can download the RPM package from the Download Section.
Apr 23rd Yet another bug fixed
Hi folks! Sorry to have to say this but there was yet another quite ugly bug in the current Gnometoaster release. It makes the tracksize calculation for filesystems behave really strange so better get the update here.
Apr 23rd Mandrake RPM package
Ralph Slooten was the first to provide a rpm package for the new Gnometoaster release. It was built on Mandrake 8 but should work on earlier versions as well. Get it in the Download section.
Apr 23rd Gnometoaster Bugfix Release 2001-04-23
This release fixes problems in the cddb code that would cause Gnometoaster to continue looking up cddb entries that don't exist. It also fixes a compile problem on FreeBSD. Please get it in the Download section.
Apr 20th Gnometoaster Binary for FreeBSD
I just uploaded a Gnometoaster binary for FreeBSD I have had around here for the last couple of days. It was provided by Eric Melville and was compiled using a small patch he also provided to me last week. So the current cvs repository of Gnometoaster should compile under BSD again. Go to the download section to get the binary.
Apr 20th Linux Mandrake8 coming with most recent Gnometoaster
Looks like Linux Mandrake has updated the Gnometoaster package coming with their distribution. This is version 2001-03-31, the most current one, now. So there's no need to download this package if you're a Mandrake user, it's probably even installed on your system already.
Apr 1st Bugfix Release RPM packages
Hi folks! Tony Breiler and Ralph Slooten sent in some .rpm packages for i686 Redhat 6 i686 and i386 RedHat 7.0, Linux Mandrake 7.2 respectively. Thanks a lot to them as for the rest of you: Get them while they're hot!
Mar 31st Gnometoaster Bugfix release 2001-03-31
Hi Folks! As I realized just a short time ago the output of mkisofs when asked for the tracksize of an ISO track has been changed in a way that makes the most recent version of mkisofs incompatible with Gnometoaster. This bugfix release of Gnometoaster will fix this issue and work with both old and new versions of mkisofs. Go to the download section to get it.
Mar 20th Redhat7.0 RPM packages ready
Jos Dehaes and Ralph Slooten provided me with RedHat 7.0 i386 binary packages of the new Gnometoaster release. Thanks a lot. Get them from the Downloads section.
Mar 19th SuSE 7.1 Packages ready
Steven Rodenburg sent me SuSE7.1 packages of the new GnomeToaster release both for x86 and a .src.rpm. Thanks a lot! Get them in the Download section.
Mar 18th Mandrake RPM packages ready
Just a few hours after the release, Ralph Slooten provided me with an updated .rpm package for Linux Mandrake. Interested ? Here you go.
Mar 18th New Gnometoaster Release 2001-03-18
Hi folks! After a rather long break (about 2 months ?!?) there it is: a brand new Gnometoaster release featuring the usual portion of bugfixes, a completely redesigned filesystem editor, freely arrangeable directories, CD Text support and quite a few error dialogs. See Changes since last release for details or go straight to the download section to get it.
Mar 10th Cddb.com closing it's doors
Along with most other programs capable of using cddb services, Gnometoaster has been closed out of cddb.com. This doesn't concern you if you use Gnometoaster in it's default configuration that is, leave the cddb server to be used at freedb.freedb.org. However, as cddb has the larger database some of you may have used it instead. Please do not ask me to make Gnometoaster a "validated" application because those guys over at gracenote require you to go with them all the way, not supporting any alternative cddb service providers. Anyway, just wanted to let you know. I guess it's time for all of us to switch to freedb.
Jan 29th New Mandrake RPM Package
Ralph Slooten sent me a new binary package of the current Gnometoaster version for Linux Mandrake. Thanks a lot! You can get it from the usual place.
Jan 8th RedHat6.0 packages
Tony Breiler just submitted two binary packages for RedHat 6.0, one for i386, one for i686. Those should work on other .rpm based distribs like SuSE as well. Get them in the Download section.
Jan 7th First Gnometoaster release of 2001
Welcome to the new millennium (for real, this time). This new release is essentially there to make life easier when trying to get the whole thing up and running. Not only does Gnometoaster finally provide some feedback on what went wrong (if something did, of course ;-)), this new release is featuring a database with it's dependencies, providing the user with download links and informations about programs it may be missing. Apart from that, an issue some people had when recording in cdrecord singlecall mode using their FAT16/32 partitions for temporary files was fixed. See 'Changes since last release' for further informations or go straight ahead to the Downloads section.
Dec 16th Gnometoaster 2000-12-16 x86 rpm package
I just received the first rpm binary package for this release, built for RedHat 6.1,i386 by Ralph Slooten. Get it from the usual place.
Dec 16th Gnometoaster 2000 Dec16th Released
Right before christmas I put together yet another Gnometoaster release for your pure cd recording pleasure. Among the cool new things of this release is tested Endian-safeness. Other changes include a warning if one of the filetype handling backends to be used when recording a cd couldn't be found. Quite a few minor bugfixes and an updated Japanese translation conclude this release. See the detailed "What's new in this version" listing below for further informations or just proceed to the download section. But please be careful not to acidentally fetch an older version. No binary packages are currently available for the new release. This should change within hours, though.
Dec 7th Two more .RPM packages
I just got two more rpm packages of the current Gnometoaster release. Both are for Linux Mandrake, one created using the .spec file coming with the Gnometoaster Source and one using the .spec provided by Mandrake. Go for it in the Download section.
Dec 3rd Gnometoaster RPM package
ok, here we go. A lot faster than last time :-)
This one was provided by Charles R. Tersteeg
Dec 2nd New Gnometoaster Release 2000-12-02 This is the Dec '00 release of Gnometoaster. Apart from KDE2.0 drag and drop
support and filetype conversion there's nothing much new to this release.
It contains a few minor bugfixes, though.
Get it from the usual place.
Nov 27th Amazing piece of documentation I received an amazing piece of documentation about Gnometoaster done by
Ralph Slooten about a week ago (but haven't had time to upload it so far as
I've been to Las Vegas). It's essentially a Flash document where you can
click through pretty much as you would with the real Gnometoaster which
is great for people just interested in the GUI and if they're gonna
like it. But have a look at it yourself in the
Documentation Section.
Nov 3rd USB CD Writers and Linux Lately I've been playing with some USB CD Writer under Linux and
the results were actually quite promising.
Once you've found the right usb driver and, in the worst case, manually enabled
a specific portion of the 2.4.0pre Linux Kernel code, everything should run
smoothly. I've tested cd recording on two different systems this way (on
some laptop and on my primary development box). While the laptop is working
flawlessly, I cannot read out audiotracks on my development box (VIA MVP3
Chipset). Over the next few days I'll try to assemble a small HOWTO on cd
writing over USB using Linux and I'd thus be very interested in your
experiences concerning that matter. So please share your discoveries with
the rest of the 'community'. Chances are good that you'll be able to
effectively help quite a few folks out there.
Oct 29th New FreeBSD port available I don't have an URL handy for you but I just received notice that there's
a new upstream version of the Gnometoaster FreeBSD port available.
It was done by Eric Melville (see "Developing Gnometoaster").
I can't test this thing so I'd be glad if someone could provide me with some
feedback on whether it actually works.
Oct 21st New Gnometoaster release 2000-10-21 This is for all of you folks who had trouble fixating their multisession
discs or whose cd writers aren't supported by cdrdao. From this release on,
Gnometoaster can handle cdrecord in a single-call-multiple-tracks
mode which both solves fixating problems on various writers and
allows for disc-at-once recordings to be made with Gnometoaster and cdrecord.
Both work perfectly well on-the-fly so you won't see a difference between
using cdrecord and using cdrdao in DAO mode. Old modes (cdrdao DAO, multicall
cdrecord TAO) are of course still supported. It's your choice :-)
Also new to this release is initial support for Solaris/Sparc. I can't test
this, though, so you're encouraged to supply me with feedback of any kind
(this applies for FreeBSD as well btw).
There has also been a considerable amount of smaller bugfixes,
esp. mp3 tracksize calculation should now work on Big Endian systems.
See Changes since last release for details about bugfixes and new features in
this release and/or get the new release here.
Sep 28th Gnometoaster-20000926 RPM packages available I just uploaded a new set of RPM packages provided by Eric Sandeen. Includes
a binary package for RedHat + Helix Gnome and a src rpm which should work
on any distribution supporting the rpm packaging format.
Get it in the Download section.
Sep 26th New Gnometoaster Release 2000-09-26 I just uploaded yet another Gnometoaster release, primarily because of a
bugfix in wav file calculation code. So if you plan to use .wav files for
audio cd creation you should update asap as you'll have a chance of about
10% or so that your wav file won't be recognized by Gnometoaster
(this is primarily referring to wav files created outside linux I think).
There have also been a few detail enhancements since the last release, e.g.
you can now select which encoder to use when dragging tracks to the
Filesystem Editor with your right mouse button pressed.
See Changes since last version for
details and get the new Gnometoaster release in
the download section.
Sep 22nd Gnometoaster and Freedom for links You may have noticed that the Gnometoaster Homepage has been replaced
by some odd announcement over a court case with some organization involved
calling themselved "Freedom for links".
Here's what this was all about.
Sep 13th The Smashing Pumpkins releasing their new album as mp3s Need food for your cd recorder ? The Smashing Pumpkins are releasing their
new album "The Machina II" as mp3 files that can be downloaded for free.
Go to their page http://machina2.cjb.net to find out
more about it and download your copy today. For further reading see
http://www.mp3.com.
Aug 30th 2000-08-29 RPM Package for i586 and src.rpm available Both were provided by okki@wanadoo.fr. Thanks a lot! Get it
here.
Aug 29th Gnometoaster Bugfixing I just created a new snapshot fixing two bugs this morning's release had:
one was that creating wav files of audiotracks didn't work because of an
additional space behind the sox call responsible for this task. The other
one was that Gnometoaster in it's current version wouldn't compile without
gnomelibs installed on your system. Get the new snapshot from the usual
location.
Aug 29th Surprise, a new Gnometoaster release Quite a bit earlier than most of you expected I'm releasing yet another new
snapshot. The good news is that there are no known bugs in the last
release expect one that would crash Gnometoaster when a drive was removed
from the drive list whose tracks were currently in display within the source
area (shouldn't happen too often).
But the real reason for the new snapshot is a whole bunch of
improvements over the last one. See Changes since last release for details.
Get the new version from the download section.
Aug 28th New version of CDRDAO available This is not as much Gnometoaster specific news as it is cool. Seems there
are quite a few nice new features like enhanced drive support and one nifty
thing that is extending existing TOC files by cddtext using automatical cddb
lookups. The author of cdrdao is also developing a frontend to his program
called 'Gnome CD Master'.
I haven't had the time to test it yet but it might be a nice supplement to
all those currently disappointed by Gnometoaster's disc-at-once/cd-text
capabilities or, in the latter case, the lack thereof ;-).
Find out more at
http://cdrdao.sourceforge.net/download.html
.
Andreas Mueller is also offering a nice drive compatibility list now, which
you can find here:
http://cdrdao.sourceforge.net/drives.html#dt
. Needless to mention that this list automatically applies to
Gnometoaster in disc-at-once mode.
Aug 21st One more new Gnometoaster release (20000821) Some cosmetics and essentially a bugfix in the recording routines that made
the progress display go mad sometimes along with a new option in
Gnometoaster's drive setup make for a new snaphot release that shouldn't
introduce too many new bugs but nevertheless add to the
"Gnometoaster experience". Well,
get it while it is hot. See Changes since
last version for details.
Aug 13th RPM Packages for Gnome Toaster 2000-08-13 I just got a 586 binary and a src rpm of the newest Gnometoaster release
from okki@wanadoo.fr.
You can download it here.
Aug 13th New Gnometoaster release As promised, this is the new Gnometoaster release.
I've tested it extensively but this doesn't mean
I can guarantee it's 100% functional of course.
See Changes since last release for a list of new
features/fixed bugs in this version.
As usual, you can get the new release from the
Download Page.
Aug 13th I think it's time Someone managed to convince me without threats of any kind to finally make a
new release. The only reason I haven't made a release is that I promised to
include filesystem virtualization which I only partly managed to do so far.
But I think it's better to release what's there now instead of keeping stuff
in the cvs rep. till the end of the world as few people seem to be in the
mood of playing around with the repository's contents (which is wise as well
because code in there is probably broken 50% of the time). Well, there's a
few things to clean up first but you can expect a new release within the
next couple of hours.
Andy
Aug 11th You won't believe it It's funny that, whenever I think this is gonna be it for the next release,
I'll find yet another issue that is more important than filesystem
virtualization. This time, it was the recording process which got totally
revamped to do the actual copying process in a separate thread.
This prevents some systems from "forgetting" about the screen update while
recording and generally decreases CPU usage. It is also a much cleaner
way to do things. As previously, you'll still be able to get a non-threaded
version by passing --without-pthreads to the ./configure script before
compiling. On a second note I just found out about what looks like a very
nice Cover Editor for Gnome. It's called gcover and I'm just downloading
it right at the moment. It's available at
http://www.extra.hu/gcover/
and it's definitely worth a look I think (Warning! The connection
speed seems to be rather slow)
.
Aug 3rd New Gnometoaster documentation and FAQ This is the first public announcement of a complete rewrite of the
Gnometoaster documentation I'm calling the Gnometoaster User's guide.
It covers most of Gnometoaster's functionality and contains a Gnometoaster
FAQ providing immediate help for most known issues.
The FAQ is also available as a separate file. Just go to the
documentation section and have a look.
Please note that the Documentation partially refers to the upcoming
Gnometoaster snapshot and resembles the state of the CVS version of
Gnometoaster.
Aug 1st Back online My new flat got connected to the public phone network this morning, so I'm
back online again. I already updated the cvs rep. to contain a few very
important changes I made to the Gnometoaster code over the last few days.
I'm now working on the last thing to go into the next release again: the
filesystem virtualization. Everything else should work properly now
incl. the pthreads based version on systems where it didn't before ;-),
tell me if it doesn't!
Jul 26th Some smaller delays I won't be able to answer any emails or do any other
work regarding Gnometoaster over the next few days as I'm moving.
Also, I might not have access to the internet over the next few days.
I will, however, do all I can to get back online as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, you may want to try out the current cvs version of gnometoaster.
I didn't find any problems on my debian woody box. On the other hand it
crashes on my Mandrake system just after startup as soon as more than one
cdrom drive is configured. I yet have to find out more about that.
Jul 17th Using Gnometoaster with recent mkisofs versions If you're facing the problem that Gnometoaster suddenly seems to be
unable to calculate the tracksizes of your data cds, please remove the
"-a" option from the mkisofs call in Gnometoaster's preferences setup.
The appropriate setup line is called "Create ISO Track with" and resides on
the "ISO9660" page of Gnometoaster's preferences setup.
Sorry for this inconvenience, the next snapshot release will automatically
fix your configuration to meet the new requirements of mkisofs, yet this
new release is still a few bugs away ;-)
Jul 13th Some Informations about the upcoming Gnometoaster release This article is primarily thought to be a confirmation that Gnometoaster
development continues as usual (if you don't believe it, have a look at the
CVS repository ;-)) despite the long time that has passed since the last
snapshot release. Fortunately, there are few known issues with the 0519
snapshot so there's no urgent reason to release a new one which puts me into
a position to finally fix a few of those annoying minor things that have
been buggering users ever since. For example, the somewhat difficult drive
setup got changed quite dramatically with one drive list now controlling
both cdrom drives and writers and featuring some auto detect functionality.
The latter still needs some work in order to work properly on linux systems
featuring both IDE and SCSI drives. There are two other issues scheduled to
be solved with the next snapshot: it will finally be possible to write
symlinks to your cds just as they are and mp3 recording will no longer be
mp3info dependent as this has been causing problems with various
configurations in the past. Future Gnometoaster version will thus no
longer rely on external programs to calculate the tracksizes of mp3->audio
tracks but implement this functionality themselves (external programs
will still be supported, of course. We're talking about the default
configuration here only). I hope you'll understand that it can easily take
another two weeks or so for those things to be implemented in a reliable way
as I'm currently busy moving which
is taking some of my time ;-)
Jul 7th Linux CD Writing Guide for beginners That one's a general guide on how to write cds using linux on the command
line. The setup procedure is pretty much the same as if you're using
gnometoaster for your recording jobs. get it
here.
Also FreeX, a German Unix magazine, has a nice article about cd writing
within linux. They're regarding Gnometoaster as the best frontend available
for Linux today.
Jun 29th Old Gnometoaster packages removed I just removed all gtoaster packages of the last year from the download
archive. I don't think there's a reason for them to be online any more.
However, I'll happily send those old archives to anyone by mail who requests
them. If there's still an interest in them tell me. I'll then put them
online again in a separate directory. The only reason I removed them was the
giant size of the archive directory which has become a burden for me as I
seem to be moving download locations quite frequently at the moment.
Jun 29th The death of Server51 I just got confirmed that andover's server51 project has finally been
dropped as a result of the merger between valinux and andover.net January
this year. Last week I reported that Gnometoaster's CVS repository had been
moved to sourceforge. That's where it's gonna stay.
Jun 26th One more piece of documentation From a news magazine this time. It's a beginner tutorial containing
detailled instructions on how to get Gnometoaster up and running,
including kernel and system configuration. Even with Gnometoaster's
drive setup changing significantly with the next release,
the steps explained in this article will remain pretty much the same.
Have a look at it at
http://www.pcquest.com/apr00/cdwriting_linux.asp
and
http://www.pcquest.com/apr00/linux_toaster.asp
.
Jun 26th CVS server change, CVS repository available again I just uploaded the gtoaster source to a new CVS repository located at
sourceforge. So you can finally access the most current development tree
of gnometoaster again. See Download
section for instructions on how to use the CVS repository.
Jun 25th Gnometoaster SourceForge Account approved I just got an automatic response from
SourceForge
that the Gnometoaster
account has finally been activated. Expect all download functions to be
available again later today.
Jun 25th New PHP backend for Homepage The Gnometoaster Homepage is currently being rewritten to utilize
some offline php scripting environment running on my local system.
Before a new version of the Gnometoaster Homepage is published,
however,
it is being converted back to ordinary html.
This makes it easier for me to make announcements, change server and download
parameters etc. while avoiding higher demands on the web hosting pc at the
same time. Anyway, I don't have anything better to do as I can't release
the next gnometoaster snapshot without a proper download location.
Jun 25th Gnometoaster rpm packages for 20000519 finally available I've had rpm binaries and source rpms around here
for days but I was just too lazy to upload them.
However,here they are.
The good news is that the hassles caused by cddb and dao
support mostly seem to have been fixed with the last release
now. There have been no bugreports apart from the things
I usually get like incompatible mkisofs versions
and configuration issue together with useful hints on
how to make gnometoaster even more powerful.
Thanks a lot to all those interested people all around the
world who have sent me bugreports and suggestions.
The next release will definitely come but after a bit
of a rough phase in gnometoaster development with 3 releases
pretty close to each other it is now time to go ahead towards
some genuinely new functionality like supporting symlinks
in fsedit etc.
